Speaker: Susan Shirk

Susan Shirk highlighted some of the key themes of her book, China: Fragile Superpower, in a Washington discussion with members and guests of the National Committee and the World Affairs Council of Washington, DC.

She focused on China’s internal politics and how its leaders have responded to challenges created by the country’s recent opening to the outside world and its dramatic economic growth. Conversely, a rising China also poses a challenge to other countries, who must calibrate their relationships with China in order to avoid conflict born out of mutual misunderstanding.
