Tuesday, May 6, 2008 -Leading China specialist David M. Lampton takes the measure of what is arguably the most important geopolitical change in the world today: the growth of China’s power. In The Three Faces of Chinese Power, he investigates the military, economic and intellectual dimensions of China’s growing influence. In a recent program for National Committee members and guests, Dr. Lampton shared his perspective on how China’s strengths are changing, where vulnerabilities and uncertainties lie, and how the rest of the world, not least the United States, should view these trends.

David M. Lampton is the dean of faculty, George and Sadie Hyman Professor of China Studies and director of the China Studies Program at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies. He was president of the National Committee from 1988 to 1997 and currently serves on its board of directors. He has written numerous books and articles on Chinese domestic and foreign affairs; most recently, he authored Same Bed, Different Dreams: Managing U.S.-China Relations, 1989-2000 and edited The Making of Chinese Foreign and Security Policy in the Age of Reform, 1978-2000.
