Director of Development

Description: The Director of Development has primary responsibility for corporate and member giving, an annual fundraising dinner, and grant proposal submissions. The Director shares responsibilities for events (ranging from annual meetings of the Board to corporate seminars and senior leader events).
The organization has a record of excellent outcomes in all of the above, a dedicated and illustrious Board of Directors, and talented staff.
Essential assignments include the following:
1. Corporate Services: Sustain strong corporate financial support for the organization by maintaining and developing contact with corporate representatives, arranging periodic mailings, maintaining databases, and tracking membership payments.
2. Corporate and Member Solicitations: Prepare periodic requests for support from Corporate Members and individual Members.
3. Annual fundraising dinner: Note: The former Development Director will manage this event in the fall of 2008 while the new Director “learns the ropes.” Thereafter the incumbent would be responsible for planning and implementing this dinner. Activities include research/development of customized invitation lists, preparation of correspondence about the dinner, venue identification and negotiation of space, coordination with Corporate Members and Board Development Committee. Supervise and/or coordinate related data base entry and drafting/production of printed materials.
4. Grant Proposals: Research and draft grant proposals to federal and private funders. Coordinate with program staff for editorial input, and with financial officer (who prepares budgets), and prepare final submissions.
5. Annual meetings of the Board, corporate seminars: Plan and coordinate, help identify speakers and topics as well as site arrangements.
6. Senior leader events: Work as part of a team (that usually includes partner organizations) to plan, coordinate and/or supervise special events for prominent Chinese officials (VIPs). Responsibilities follow those of a fundraising dinner but also include coordination of protocol and security.
Qualifications:
-- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
-- Minimum of three years of grant proposal and fundraising experience with a proven record of ability
-- Ability to conduct research and utilize information for development
-- Track record in managing multiple tasks, details, and deadlines
-- Strong communication skills (oral and written)
-- East Asian training and/or Chinese language ability desirable
-- Computer skills to include Excel, Word and Access
