PIP DC Conference

PIP VII Washington D.C. Workshop

The seventh cohort of the National Committee’s Public Intellectuals Program met for the first time October 22-26, and did so in person. The workshop’s tightly packed schedule was divided between internal meetings (including training in media outreach, on-air interview skills, and presentations on their own research), and external meetings with governmental and private sector institutions and people to help the fellows better understand U.S.-China relations and the policymaking process. Among these were current and former officials from the U.S. Departments of State and Defense, the National Security Council, Congress and congressionally mandated Commissions, NGOs, and think-tanks. The briefers shared updates on China policy and how it is made, and ways that academic expertise is incorporated into that process. Fellows left the program with new insights into their role as public intellectuals, and new skills for effective public outreach.

Congressional briefing

Last month, the National Committee launched its second virtual Congressional staff delegation to China, a series of weekly briefings for 20 handpicked senior House and Senate aides. Strategically positioned between Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry’s second meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xie Zhenhua, and the opening of COP26, the briefings with U.S. Embassy officials and business representatives in China, PIP Fellows with climate and energy expertise, and Chinese government officials and think tank scholars, centered on U.S.-China climate and energy relations.
