Senior Program Officer

Joseph (Jody) Segar joined the National Committee in 2021 as a senior program officer. He works primarily on the Professional Fellows Program, as well as public events

A semester in Yunnan Province while earning a B.A. in East Asian studies at Oberlin College was the first in a series of experiences that led to more than a decade of life, work, and academic research in China. A season as a river guide and work as a musician in Chongqing, led to an M.A. in anthropology at Stanford University, where doctoral field research on gray economy workers took him full circle back to Chongqing.

More recently, Mr. Segar has worked in educational travel and study abroad, initially based in Xi’an with the Alliance for Global Education, and then supervising and developing programs throughout China with Where There Be Dragons. In his spare time, he enjoys writing songs, cooking, exploring cities, and growing Chinese vegetables.
