The National Committee’s subnational initiatives bring together state and municipal-level leaders from across the country who work on China-related issues in the areas of trade and investment, education, culture, agriculture, and development. During this time of heightened tensions in the bilateral relationship, these initiatives seek to educate, foster coordination, and develop best practices among participants.
In 1990, the National Committee organized a visit by a high-level Chinese delegation to the United States. Led by Shanghai mayor and future PRC premier Zhu Rongji, the delegation included former Shanghai mayor Wang Daohan and the mayors of Wuhan, Chongqing, Taiyuan, Hefei, and Ningbo — six of China's largest and most outward-looking cities.
In June 2007, the National Committee worked with long-time partner, the National League of Cities (NLC), and new partner, the League of California Cities (LCC) on a ten-day study tour to Beijing, Qingdao and Shanghai for mayors, city council members, and the NLC and LCC leadership.
